About the Hellenic Community, its Committee and our Contact Details
One can ask this question “who or what is the Hellenic Community of Johannesburg and Witwatersrand (HCJW) ?”
We feel the answer is best described in our “Memorandum Of Association” written in 1918 by those who came before us, who had the vision and the will to create this great organization.
- “To maintain, encourage and cultivate among its members the ideal of love for and the support of their special nationalism and religion.”
- “To uphold and maintain the character, position and status of the Greek Community …..”
- To erect and maintain a Greek School” …….”to erect and maintain other religious, national, charitable, philanthropic, educational and sociable institutions….”
- “To render moral and material support to all Greek national subjects and to promote the public welfare …...”
Today the HCJW has approximately 800 members with about 110 pupils at 10 different “after school” locations (See Schools). It overseas the functioning of the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen Johannesburg (See Church) . It is a member of the Federation of Hellenic communities and Associations of South Africa. It celebrates Greek ethnic and religious events and succeeds time and time again in achieving the goals set out for it by its establishment in 1907. In short the HCJW is an integral part of Hellenism in South Africa Today.
